Big Sister quilt
This is one I made for my friend, who is expecting a baby boy in just 3 weeks now! I posted pics of the baby's quilt earlier; this is the Big Sister quilt I made for her daughter, who is turning 7 this week.
The fairies, if you can even see them, were embroidered by machine. I originally was going to do more of them, but I'm still too new to embroidery to get it right and they weren't turning out that great so I picked the best 5 and just used those, scattered through the quilt.

Don't know what problems you were having with the embroidery, but those designs look to have pretty high stitch count. To do them on thin quilting cotton, you would need a LOT of stabilizer
All Stitch is a good place for stabilizer. If you go to this site, there are lots of links with good info. Scroll down to Stabilizers/Backings. Really good articles:
