Black Eyed Susan
#1
This is the finished project. I've been working on this for awhile. It's only my second quilt - the first being a simple D9P which I hand quilted because I hadn't done any fmq or long arm quilting.
I started this quilt quite awhile ago. I had a few moments of not working on it due to being "Stuck" because of not knowing what I wanted to do next; also, after I started it, I decided to take a class at the local quilt shop to learn how to use their long arm machine. After the class, I did some practicing of fmq at home on my regular machine....then took the quilt to the shop and just went to town on it.
Anyway, this is done with the Quiltsmart pattern for applique. I really enjoyed using it. The background fabrics are just from FQs that I bought along the way mostly at JoAnns. The batik the petals are made out of, I fell in love with in the store - unfortunately I didn't buy more of it at the time. I was able to find a companion fabric to it, and used that for the binding, and some for the butterflies and hearts on the back.
The reason the hearts and butterflies are on the back, is they are covering the "blank" spots that were left - I did the quilting around the flowers, but didn't want the petals to be quilted - they kind of stand out more that way. Therefore, there were blank spots on the back, so since I love hearts and butterflies, I decided to use the batiks to make some - and they look better in person. :)
I am proud of this. It's not perfect, there are flaws. But, I really am happy with it. This is MY quilt (my first went to my daughter but this one is not going anywhere!).
Thanks.
Martha
