I've used crayons on several quilts and so far the colors have held true. With this one, I would quilt a space, the go in and add color with my crayons. I've loved coloring since I was a little girl! After I did the pebbling, I colored about 2/3 of the pebbles in different colors then went over the entire pebbling area with a soft color to blend them all together. I heat set them with shot of steam from my iron. If you want more intense color, heat the fabric first.
