    I have been hand quilting for about 20 years now. I've started wholecloth quilting in 1993.

    This is really a good question. Of course the material makes a big difference - I use quite thin battings like cotton or 80/20, but I also love to use wool. My fabrics have a higher thread count like 150 or 160, but I only use cottons. And maybe it's a matter ot the method: I'm a self taught quilter and I only do single stiches, but not stab stiching. This needle is alwas guided on the top. The thumb of my right hand lies on the eye of the needle, not opposite of the needle tip on the fabric. And I hold the thread between the thumb and the forefinger of the right hand, directly at the needle's eye. Perhaps this is the "secret" - I really don't know!
