When a colleague at work told me that her husband wanted to do the nursery in camo, my wheels started turning. Dad is a hunter and loves the outdoors, but she felt they needed to wait until the baby got a little older, so I made sure this blanket would be around when Archer got older. The night after the baby shower, Mom-to-Be said that she was afraid Dad-to-Be was going to sleep with this blanket. She said that she had to explain to him that it belonged to the baby not him. I was so glad they liked it. I wasn't sure how Mom to Be would feel about it, but my gift at the shower was the one that made her cry, so I think she liked it. She was more upset with me for making her cry.

That is GREAT !!! I'm always studying others' applique to improve my own.....how did you cut out the shapes, what are they made from, and how are they attached. I've looked closely at the photo and can't tell. Will you please share?

On my computer, I googled the silhouette shapes, found them, enlarged them to fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper and printed them out on my printer. (Now that I have a Silhouette Cameo I can use it, but I didn't have it yet.) Using my light box I traced the silhouettes on Heat and Bond, ironed them on black flannel and cut them out by hand while watching TV. I have used regular cotton fabric before, as well, but I like the feel of flannel on baby blankets. Then I placed them on the blanket, moved them around 15 times, took 8 or 9 pictures and finally using a Teflon pressing sheet, I pressed them on the blanket. They really don't bond for very long, but they do stay in place long enough for me to top stitch all around the shapes. I top stitch instead of using a blanket stitch on these blankets because I hope they will get used and washed a lot. On the larger shapes, I sew in details, like wings, fur, paws, etc. because I don't want the centers to sag. That stitching doesn't show up at all in the pictures. Honestly, the camo just about camouflages everything. For the letters, I used the fonts in Microsoft word, printing them very large and making them wider when I traced them. They were ironed on lime green flannel. I try to make blankets that are large and that kids can use for a while instead of just a year or two. I hope all of this makes sense. I love to applique, so that is why I invested in the Silhouette Cameo cutter. If I only had time to play with it.

I purchased pre-made fleece throw, already stitched around the edges. I just added all the applique and stitched them all on. That is the way to go!
