Golly! Thank you all very much! I went with a flannel design that is quite different from the front. I think the backing is sweet enough to be given a turn at being the upside too!
It's my own ideas rather than based on a pattern though I look through loads of pics of stuff before I decide. It's just one of these things that you know ( or hope you know!) when you've plumped for the right thing. I swapped the coloured bands around the strips to pull the bands together and tried to keep the bulk of the top 'soft' to compliment the strong primary colours.

That is one adorable quilt. Lucky is the child who gets it!
Fleece is warm enough and I have used it as the batting, but not usually as the backing. I like the idea of making the quilt double sided, too.
