I have a similar one that my grandmother had. Dowels in the handles and an insert on the bottom that was a thin piece of hardboard. Very handy! The hardboard gave it a built in trivet, and yet the wooden handles and bottom are removable for washing. I liked the one from my grandmother so much I drafted a pattern and made one for all the women in the family.Pam

Great idea to use that plaid fabric. My guess is that it helped with straight edges.
