I never heard of the "old Abe" pattern. An interesting suggestion! Thanks!

I thought of using a variegated or beige thread. My friend thought that black thread might be more available back then and therefore used. I'm a little unsure but I suppose I could try in on a scrap!

There's 45 big squares and 135 small squares. I just cut triangles and pieced. I'm still learning about shortcuts and other things. I have a book of patterns that I used templates from but arranged in this pattern that I saw at a quilt show.

That is a great quilt. I am in the thinking stage right now, trying to decide what pattern I want to use with my civil war reds and browns.

imo, a flower would be too fussy for that quilt. it's a very masculine looking one and should be quilted with a simple design.
either 1/4" inside the larger square or a circle inside the larger square. i would sid around the rectangle that encloses the small triangles.

what size are the large and small triangles and the quilt? and are you hand- or machine- quilting it?

i think medium brown thread. it will show, but not take over.

Another newbie! Terrific quilt and welcome to the QB. I like the idea of stars and also being traditional for the period as well. Good luck. You do beautiful work. Sherrie

Nice quilt. All those HST's would have driven my poor tired eyes bonkers.

During that period, two rows of quilting, a quarter inch apart were done as a rule. I made a CWQ that is a family album and had it done with the double row throughout. It was a very plain, echo type done next to the seams.

Beautiful quilt! If you want curves for the quilting, Baptist Fan or Clamshell would look nice.
