I am thinking hand stitch it on with a ladder stitch. It woun't take all that long and the loop will be free. Years ago I made my sister a purse simular to this. I had a Really nice western belt that I was able to cut down, because the silver tip screwed off with tiny screws. It made the purse something special.

I ended up hand stiching it down. But, I used blue thread, to match the denim. It shows up a lot on the red lining fabric. You can see each stitch, which are not all the same distance apart. I'm going to redo it with red.

Hand stitched, now I'm stuck again. I sewed into the base of the waste band. Now it's gappy (technical term). Here is a picture. Also, I have some ultra fusible stuff. It's really hard and crusty. It's on the bolt, about 15 yards. Is this something I could use? How would I do it?
