    the flannel will stop the slipping off the legs--tuck it in and it will stay

    I don't think if I was going to put flannel on the back I would put any batting.

    Very nice quilt and very nice of you to make it for him. As for batting, ask if he tends to be cold or not and make it according to the answer.
