    Default Diamonds

My quilt top will go to the charity I sew for.

Backstory for this quilt: I was working on my normal 6-1/2" square string blocks using Pellon #830 (very light weight used for making patterns) for the foundation, when a neighbor came to have coffee and as always, wanted to see what I was working on. (She doesn't quilt, admires those of us who do.) Laughingly said, geepers, if I quilted, I'd use those dryer sheets. Hmmm. seems that she can do a dozen loads a week between her kids and her parents laundry, "do you want me to save them"? Sure, why not, figuring she'd forget, but over the weekend she brought me a bag of them -- all nicely washed and soft and the iron doesn't stick or melt them! Had to try them. Not sure if I like this one, because the diamonds don't show up too well. I was going to sash the 4-block diamond, but I got carried away making these diamonds and made way too many. I will try again, making half light diamonds, and half dark diamonds. I trimmed the diamonds 6" x 9-1/2" but will trim the next ones to 6-1/2" wide. Doesn't matter if the foundation is smaller than the trimmed block. The stuff is so lightweight and easy to work with.

I've heard about using these for years, but today I pulled a bunch of them out of the lint bag and will give them a try. Love your string diamonds

Me too. You say they do okay with ironing. I will give them a closer look. We produce about 4 of the rumpled, used dryer sheets per day.

i learned to use dryer sheets for applique over 20 yrs ago from a quilt teacher where i used to live. sew the applique ..like an assembled sun bonnet sue, stitch right side of applique face down onto dryer sheet. make small slit in dryer sheet, turn right side out and machine applique to block. raw edges are turned inside and no fraying ..use whatever stitch you like. i have used it for several quilts, both quilting cotton and faux fur & minkie over the years. i have planned to use them for strip piecing ..now, after seeing your wonderful quilts ..i just need to quit procrastinating!
hint: i wash mine to rid of residual oils and scent, then press w synthetic setting on iron. also ..for our euro members, a friend in holland sent me a box of nappy liners and told me that that's what she uses. i love them! no odor and can be used right out of the box.
