Just called my DH, who works in the electrical supply industry to see if his company stocks these. They do. Of course, he kept refering to dimming the Ott lamp and it took a minute for him to understand my desired use. (He thinks in a very linear fashion - a light dimmer would only be used for dimming a light, right?)

When he 'got' it, he said, "Where'd you hear that nifty little tip?" Well, the Quilting Board, of course. Fabulous idea!

Where might one find this wonderful little item? What was the cost of it? I realize price will vary but just a general idea.

That also would be good for teaching young ones how to sew or any new sewer. Accuracy first speed second.

Keep in mind, there are certain things that should not be put on a dimmer. Most fluorescent or arc-type light bulbs will blow if they're dimmed--and they could take the light fixture and/or the switch with them. They have to be specially designed for dimming. This also goes for three-way lamps; don't put a non-dimmable fluorescent bulb into a lamp with a three-way switch. At best, you'll have a burned-out light; at worst, you could have a fire on your hands.

Also, one-speed motors should never be put on a dimmer, or they'll burn out. Most sewing machines are variable-speed motors, so that's fine. The foot pedal is just a dimmer of sorts, after all. I do like the idea of putting a manual dimmer on the machine--it's especially useful for those with limited mobility or sensation in their feet.

Like "cruise control" for your sewing machine! I love it. I want it. My youngest daughter needs it...

this is exactly why dh came up with this for me and for him as well.. he is learning and trying to learn control of speed.
the grandkids can feel more relaxed sewing then having anxiety over a "run away sewing machine".. now they can only go so fast and they feel soo much better !
