I think the trick to getting them to turn out the same is to be sure you have trimmed the HST before you sew them into the Broken Dishes pattern, which is the basis for the Disappearing Hourglass. I have made about a dozen of these blocks and forgot to trim about four of them. Didn't work. Had to rip. The rest are beautiful.

    Your quilt is beautiful!
I have never been one to starch fabric before cutting ,,....
but now , I starch the front and flip and starch the back of the fabric.
My BFF gave me a rotating cutting matt.
    and wow again..
    The difference in the
Slicing and cutting is amazing ! Good luck

I've found that if you sew like Jenny Doan, so there are bias edges EVERYWHERE!!!, you MUST use starch or sizing or something to stiffen those bias edges, or you'll never get them straight. I try NOT to have all those bias edges... they just don't like me, so I avoid them at all cost!

That didn't help much - all of those diagonal edges, no matter how careful I was not to stretch them, made everything all wonky again. Ended up only making 4 blocks before I tore all of my hair out. After adding a couple of borders to get it up to size, it's now a carseat quilt.

Half square triangles made the unbiased way is definitely the way to go. Less work with trimming etc and no problems with bias to deal with.
