This is so totally what a walking foot is for. Try it and I just know you will love it.
A walking foot "steps" up and forward (or backwards) on each stitch, so it is not pressing down on the work as you try to stitch along.
    Great foot.

The rug mat is slowly getting bigger. I will use up the 100 feet of rope. It will be interesting to see how big it will get. My cats are waiting for me to finish so they can dig their claws in. I am so glad I bought the walking foot yesterday and figured out how to install it on my Kenmore sewing machine. The manual and instructions were useless. So thankful for the internet. Others were having the same issue and once they figured it out, posted how to install correctly. I did the same on my site.

Do you sew as you go?

Yes. I have been doing both. You can wrap it all first, but I know I would get bored. This way I know I will keep going and get it done. I have my sewing machine on my kitchen table and have been doing it off and on during the day. just make sure to pin it well.
