Oh by the way, it is really cool. especially the colors you chose!
I don't know of a "trick" and not sure about octagons. But for this hexy quilt
It's kind of hard for me to explain. But here is a quick explanation.
    1. I lay out every thing
    2. I make the rows, by sewing the top flat edge to the bottom flat edge, stopping 1/4 from the ends, back stitch.
    3. I sew the rows together by matching the edges (mark the edges that get sewn together), stopping 1/4 from the end, back stitch, to make the Y-seam

    There you have it!

I watched this you tube video on Machine Piecing Hexagons, 4 minutes into it she show the Y-seams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQG0V42O0fI

Every time I tried a short-cut, I had to rip it out and start over. Be sure to mark what edges that go together. I used colored straight pins. blue to blue, red to red, yellow to yellow and so on.

the free down load on Amy Butler's webiste, for Sexy Hexy Love Quilt will show you how to assemble the hexs.

Nice! Did you do the quilting yourself and if you did, did you have a longarm or did you use a regular sewing/quilting machine??
