This is such a spectacular quilt and the perseverance it must have required is mind boggling. What a wonderful and beautiful gift for your friend! You are right, very few people could afford to buy a quilt this detailed and beautiful.This is a quilt that will still be treasured and passed down with each successive generation!
As far as the shams go, I think it would be very pretty to put only one Burgoyne square in the center of each white sham. Envelope style is the easiest type of sham to make. I found a nice tutorial for that: http://www.ourlakelife.com/2012/01/0...llow-tutorial/
I've also made a few pillow covers with hidden zippers, which explains my problem with thinning hair, I tore out so much of it (both stitches and hair)... LOL.
