Should be more like 15 yards (machine) or 8 yards (hand).

Excerpt below:
How much background do I need?
In the book , I suggest 5 yards for the entire quilt. This is an error on my part. If you are hand-piecing, you will need about 8 yards. If you are machine piecing, I recommend about 15 yards. However, if you are foundation piecing, you will need about twenty. This information had been graciously provided by those who have made the top. (Myself? I have made many Jane quilts, blocks and triangles.

I really recommend you check out that website. There is all kinds of good info on constructing most of the blocks, even if you have all the rulers and the software. It's mostly user contributions, who've walked the walk. So for every typo, misprint, convoluted block, wt& moment - someone else had already come up with a solution.

Dear Jane - what an undertaking! I have about 40 blocks done but couldn't keep up with the group because of back and hand issues. Some of the blocks were pretty intense but so worth it. They truely are heirlooms! Can't wait to see more!

Keep posting your progress - it is motivating! I am just taking the plunge and need all the motivation I can get. Your idea of using batiks and reversing the colors is great. Will look forward to more of your work.
