It's just half square triangles, alternating the red/white and blue/white half square triangles to make the pinwheels.

Here's a couple of links to a free pattern. The blocks are smaller than those in the top I made, but otherwise it's the same. The blocks in my quilt are 9.5" (Most of them are - first pieced quilt top blocks tend to vary in size.) and the individual half-square triangle blocks are 5". I think the squares I used to make the half square triangles were 5 -7/8th inches. I did not paper piece. The thought of paper piecing gives me the heebie-jeebies.

The youtube link is really helpful. Wish I'd known about it when I was working on the quilt top as the method demonstrated seems much easier than what I did.

I also think that the effect of stars is more visible because I used only 4 fabrics. Just looked at the quilt top again and now can see the stars in the white/red fabric and white/blue fabric. Sometimes I amaze myself!

Bow ties, too? Well, that's another quilt I can cross off my list of quilts to do!
