You are entirely too kind with your praise. But I absolutely agree that a person can achieve wonderful results on a domestic machine. A long arm is not required to quilt well. One area that I'm still not pleased with and feel a long arm would help a lot in is basting and keeping the layers tight. I pin and pin and pin but there is some shifting, like it or not, while moving the quilt all around through a domestic machine. I love how a quilt can be loaded and clipped so firmly on a long arm frame, but that alone is just not enough to sell me on the purchase of a very expensive and limited use item.
Recently I was working on my FMQ on my domestic machine with two wall hangings. On the first I used Elmer's washable school glue with tiny dots... first on the backing, laid my batting on it and then dotted the wrong side of the front and laid it on the batting. Then, dried the glue by lightly pressing it with my iron.
With the second one I used my good old 505 spray baste. I was surprised that my quilt held in place without any pins on the one I glued instead of the one I heavily spray basted. On the glued wall hanging nothing moved/shifted while I was heavily FMQing. Pinning is very hard on my finger joints... sew, using glue will probably be my best choice.
