Don't know who told you that pruning is the answer. Mine didn't bloom until I STOPPED pruning - LOL. We moved into our house in August. The garden and yard had not been mowed or weeded since we had made the deal in April - with the closing set for Aug. Ugh. Then for the next several years, I kept trying to get rid of a 'weed' under the kitchen window. One spring, I was late with my weeding, and all of a sudden that weed had the most beautiful flowers! My husband built a wrought iron frame for it around and above the kitchen window, and I get to see all those gorgeous lavender flowers from the kitchen sink.
