I always use half inch seams, and some come out fluffier than others. Depends on the flannel, and no, not on the price of the flannel. Some work better than others...

A rag quilt is on my bucket list so I appreciate all the helpful tips. This one is very pretty.

what did you use for backing? what about batting? i generally either use a cotton batt or another layer of flannel in the center...so 3 layers of flannel really makes it nice & (fluffy/cozy) also i clip pretty close- like 1/8"-1/4"...i don't really measure i just clip, clip, clip- but my clips are pretty close together. i've found (for me) that the wider the seams the less happy i am with it- i use 1/4"-3/8" seams and clip close-then i have a nice, (like chennille-sp) frayed edge- too long & they just get stringy-not fluffy.

Ckcowl, I used flannel for the backing and cotton batting ( warm and natural - it's something warm in the title ). I learned about the use of flannel as batting after I made this one. My next rag quilt ( for the dog) will have flannel for batting- I am eager to see how this turns out. I sewed the seams 1/2 inch and cut the seams every 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart. That's good to know about the length. Thanks

I made all my rag quilts with good quality flannel, 1 inch seams, no batting and clipped every fairly close.

My top load washer, has a presoak cycle that agitates, but does not drain. I reset it many times and use a colander to strain the thread bits out of the water.

They get plenty fluffy, even the denim backed ones.

I have only made one rag quilt from years ago. It was a small lap size & I used 3/4 in seams.
I swore I would never make another one it made such a mess in the washer & dryer. The more it was
    washed the better it got.

pretty quilt! Thanks for all the info! I've got a bunch of blocks cut but didn't know about the mess in the washer and dryer. I would have been surprised!
