Thanks everyone, it's not hard to do, you just have to be brave! I have a photo of Teddy in somewhat the same pose and am using that to paint the hair. I am using various thread colors, including a variegated, building in layers.

I made this horse quilt for my niece in the same way.

Tiger Lily, the horse is thread painted, embellished with machine embroidery
