OK, I've got a sneaky idea (one that I would use myself). Take the nice things that are in the cabinet and "rearrange" them just a little to make space for just a little of your stash -- says perhaps a few fat quarters. Then say "I didnt think _____ would mind if I borrowed a little of his space to store some of these pretty things that I love so much." Work on it a little at a time, until it's his idea to put the things elsewhere so you can use the cabinet for more practical things. You're right, it's got to be his idea. Good luck.
Oh Gail... you are so devious! LOL

The collective wisdom on this board is something else. Being only 14 years into this marriage thing, I've got a lot to learn. We're just getting past the "puffy chest, it's my way or else" stage of things...

When I started quilting, that is exactly why I threw one big hissy fit about everyone in the house having a room of their own and not me, the adult, the parent, one of the bill payers. DH and shared a bedroom, it wasn't all mine. He had a room off the garage for his 'shop'. I moved the kids in one room and took over a bedroom. When we moved I wouldn't look at any houses that didn't have a spare room just for me. :D It was a pain moving everything when I needed the dining room or when company came and there was a mess to look at.

I quilted out of my dining room for quite a while! Even my husband, who is blind to messes, complained about it! Finally my older daughter moved out and I took over her bedroom as my sewing room. There's a place to put most of my stuff, but it's kind of a work in progress, and I suspect it always will be! Little snippets of thread that missed the trash can EVERYWHERE!

Your pictures bring back memories of before we moved. My 'sewing room' was my kitchen table, and I had boxes/piles of projects...started and waiting for a start pretty much all over the house! Now I do have...or will have, once I get it organized...a sewing room. And, like you, I moved projects and fabric more often than not so we could sit down at the table. I'm thoroughly going to enjoy my room once it's the way I want it!

Sounds like me, Harmony. My sweetie would complain that we had no place to sit when I worked on projects. I know when I get myself set up in my sewing room, he'll wonder where I'm at. That's ok, because he'll find a chair, and come where I am, and we get some good visiting in while I'm doing my thing!

Just keep sewing, Jerrie. I sewed for years on the kitchen table in very tight quarters. Sometimes it can be a mess, but don't give up. Now that I do have my own room for sewing, it's still a mess and too small. It seems my space needs to be bigger and bigger. I still have to go to the table to spread out sometimes.

Esqmommy - I'm laughing "with" you :). Although I'm not nearly as brave. Don't want any photographic evidence floating around (LOL) :) My dining room looks a lot like yours, but then I decide to keep DH company in the living room and guess what, I bring the handwork with me so I mess up that room too. I do have a bedroom in the house that was designated for my sewing room, but I find myself too detached from everything that's going on. Also, the light is better in my dining room.

I have my sewing room now set up in the Family room. It is where the computers are and I love to have everyone around me so I am not isolated. When I'm sewing DH will sit at the computer or on the couch to read. When any of the kids are home they will bring their laptops into the FR and sit on the couch too. Where I sit at my machine I can see what's on the main computer and easily turn my head slightly and see the couch and what is going on there. I love to be around the family. I could take over one of the bedrooms but then I would have to be there all by myself. Since the FR is in the back of the house and we have a living room, I don't have to keep it quite so neet. You have to purposefully walk into that room to see much in it and if anyone want's to look.... well, it is a working room afterall!!

It's a toss-up - being with people (sometimes) when working - or having one's "own" isolated space.

I'd sure like to be able to have/do both at the same time (sometimes)
