Yes, it took a while to line up the fabrics after I had taken the shirt to pieces. Then I had to find extra triangles here and there to make up each 8. Determined to use up the fabric as much as possible, I then cut all the small squares for the four patch blocks in the sashing. Lots of scraps left which I shall use somehow in the backing.

I think I will have to try a stack and whack to fully understand. Was the blue four patch also a variation on stack and whack?

Yes. My blocks were 6 inch square when finished. so I cut 3 and a half inch strips from 4 layers, and sliced those through the 4 layers for 4 identical squares for each block. Much easier then the octagonal blocks!

I would love to try that. It does seem easier than the octagons. Let me go over that again. You lined up the 4 layers to match the fabric pattern and then cut 3 1/2" strips to make four 3 1/2" blocks. When you were done, they made 6" blocks. Yay!

I will never look at Hawaiian prints the same way again. This is stunning. The sashing is perfect and really ties this work together!

Thank you! It was lots of fun to collect the shirts and then to make the quilt. The sashing process (not my invention) is very clever.
