This is a very sentimental project and the recipient will never see a flaw. Similar story here; my Mom passed away while knitting a baby blanket for my youngest daughter. At the time I just bagged it up and stuck it in the closet. Several times I thought about fixing it and got it out and just cried. Long story shortened..my Mom's sister finished it for my daughters first born son July 2009. Not a dry eye at the baby shower when story was told and her sister just beamed with pride for finishing a project her sister had started. Enjoy the process and share the love !
