Okie3 - thanks for going to the trouble of scanning in the quilt pattern!
Omak - thanks for the link.

I'm wondering (in regards to these patterns) why great-great grandma might have pieced the centers together first. I'm not sure if she meant to join with diamonds or not. If she did, then I can see why she didn't get this one finished! :)

depending on where she lived, it might have been a long time getting to the muslin, or maybe she was trying to figure out a way to NOT have to sew in two diamonds. Or, there was an unexpected move, or life just got in the way of finishing the project. And, as you said ... setting in the diamonds were a challenge, though not as much a challenge by hand as by machine.
The fact that she held on to those blocks at all is a miracle.
And, to have continuing generations save them for a quilter that they weren't even sure would appear in their family ... that is a real gift!

I am so jealous, your going to be busy. I love inherited quilting stuff.
I bought something similar from an antique store. I feel priviledged to complete someones' work that is gone. hope there will be someone to do the same for me. Enjoy!!

My grandmother called this pattern "Periwinkle" and here is a pic of one of many she made, using an octagon to join them.
