I'm a black and white person when it comes to adding to bright colors. Black and white polka dots would be my preference but since you don't show that, I would go with the checks. I took classes with Freddy Moran and she suggests black and white to give the eyes a place to rest between brights.

I think I'm on plan B now, a 1/2 inch white frame around the blocks with a 1" black-white dot as a sashing.

It should have been paperpieced , but I quit trying before I took my eye out
