HELP!!! Opinions and Ideas Please.

Ok, I'm having withdrawals from quilting and decided I needed to do something while my favorite machine is in the shop (been 3 weeks)... so I borrowed my sisters OLD singer and decided to work on my grandsons blue jean quilt while I had the use of a heavier duty machine.
My question is this. I am doing the quilt in the Jacob's Ladder design... would it be bad to use a red calico fabric for the cross part of it or should I stick to blue jean material and try and find red jean material? thank you in advance for your advice and assistance.

Steven picked out the calico which is why Im wanting to use it if possible. Just want to make sure it will "wear" ... stablizer what is that and how do you use it? I've never heard of it before. Yes, quilter for several years but still consider myself a newbie :D

Stablizer is like interfacing. I would guess an iron on would be best. There are a zillion different kinds, you want one of the lighter weight ones so that the calico isn't too stiff. Hopefully someone will jump in with a brand name and type.
