HOW on earth did I do this!?

I was actually, at the moment, trying some FMQ. I don't know how to and was just seeing what the hubbub was about. I'll bet PaperPrincess is right!! I never even thought to pay attention to that.
Man I love this board!!!

did you remove the bobbin case at some point?
maybe it jumped or shifted while you were doing FMQ
those are the ideas i can think of that might cause this to happen.
either that or the guy did it to the bobbin case thinking you might ask to see the old one.

If you were FMQ'ing could you have moved the fabric too fast causing the needle to bend on the down stroke then deflect off the bobbin case?
I'm glad you got it fixed. I hope they didn't ding you too badly for the new case. You may be able to salvage the damaged one as a spare by clipping the raised plastic off then smoothing the area with a nail file

I've heard that sometimes when you sew too quickly (especially going away from you) you can bend the needle so that it will nick the bobbin cover and put the timing off.
I've never done it so I don't know if this is really true or just a rumor but I thought I'd mention it.

What size needle were you using to FMQ? The needle may have been too small and deflected enough to hit the bobbin case. Since it hit the bobbin case near the edge, the needle wouldn't necessarily have broken. But it may now be bent.
