How to quilt around applique
This is my first applique quilt top. I really don't know how to quilt around the applique. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. I quilt on my DSM and can FMQ. My usual quilting style is to SITD my main blocks, then use some sort of stencil in any alternating type blocks. I don't want to quilt over the applique, I think that would look weird, but just at a loss...

Beautiful quilt and your applique work is gorgeous. I just watched a video from Quilt Roadies and she had a quilt with redwork on alternating blocks like yours and the quilter did cross hatching and it turned out beautiful.

How to quilt around applique
I am butting in on this thread but I am just learning to applique and your response of Crosshatching brought a question to my mind. Would you crosshatch the background square first and then attach applique over the crosshatching? or attach the applique and then crosshatch around the applique? I think my first idea would be the easiest, but I am an applique and a crosshatching rookie both. TIA

Your applique is just lovely. Really beautiful. I'm not terribly talented with quilting on the DSM. I've done it, and it looked ok, but not with anything like your top.
Other options would always be hand quilting, tying or having it longarmed. I think it depends on your budget, time, energy and skill level.
