I live out in the desert and didn't think we even had hummingbirds around here. But I found two feeders at a yard sale so I bought them and put them up. It only took a day or two for them to find the feeder and now we have lots. They get really mad when the feeder gets empty. My husband swears that they glare at him if he is out there.

They also seem to prefer the stuff I make at home, no coloring, too the stuff you can buy. I made my own for awhile, then bought the nectar at the store and they ignored it. So back to the homemade stuff.

I didn't know how mean they were to each other. Sometimes it looks like hummingbird wars out there.

Mary, how do you make your "food"? Mine will eat the bought stuff for awhile, then want no more of it even tho I refresh it every couple of days.

I found that hanging those little feeders that are made to go with a hanging basket is really good and I hang them from trees.

I make my hummer food with 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water. Boil for 5 minutes, cool completely & fill the feeder.
Don't let it get moldy in the feeder. If you make more all at once, store in fridge. It will store for awhile but can still get moldy in the ref.if left too long.

We make our food 4 to 1 . 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar. In spring it can be a 3 to 1 for more energy before things start blooming and they are nesting.

BTW Im so happy you have hummers. They are so interesting and relaxing to have around. It just seems to make everything right with the world when you have them working and buzzing around you!. ENJOY

Oh and i've read and been told that the red aditives really aren't great for the hummers. If you want red wrap some cloth or a ribbon around the bottle or put a red flower on it. We don't have to they just come to the feeders even thou there isn't any color to the necter, but they are hummer feeders and do have red in the base.
