Fantastic work on this Hunter's Star. I've got parts of one sitting in a closet - you inspire me to go back to it.

I always wanted to make the Hunter's Star and when I saw a strip piecing method on this board finally made one. It got 2nd place in the fair this summer. I just did stitch in the ditch up/down, back & forth, and on the diagonal on my domestic machine. Personally I don't like heavy quilting and didn't want to distract from the quilt with an over-all quilting technique. Good luck with whatever you decide. Your quilt is beautiful (and your dog is priceless!).

I sure do love the Hunter's Star. Can't help you with the LAQ question, but take it along to your class for those who have the experience to express their opinions. Doesn't mean you have to abide by their suggestions.

Now I can see taking your work to shops to Show & Tell :D , but if you are taking a FM class on reg machine, I would not want to 'learn' on a prized piece.

Not much help on the quilting. Maybe some 'curvey' (is that a word?) soft/open design.

    Good luck on your class
I cut the pieces and then put them together. I'm not a paper piecer. I've tried but I would rather piece quilt. I wasn't very clear - believe me it's not you! I'm going to take a long arm class at one of our local quilt stores for three hours. One on one lesson at a darling quilt store close to me. (All quilt stores are darling!) She says I'll be ready to quilt one of my own quilts. I haven't done more than three minutes on a machine before! Could she be right? This is scarry!!!!!!
When I was first learning on a LA I practiced with a large sheet of paper and a pencil on the table. I still do this with a new pattern I want to try to give my muscles 'memory'

I agree, Delilah, I don't care for heavy quilting. And I also agree that overall quilting will 'muddy' the star pattern. But as she wants to longarm the quilting, I don't think she can do SITD or outlining, at least not without ruler work or a ton of practice. I can hardly LA a straight line without difficulty after 3 years of practice

I love it too! It makes me think about a picture of a quilt I have been looking at in a magazine with swirly feathers quilted on it. I'll get the magazine and tell you which one I am looking at. It's BHG American Patchwork & Quilting, June 2010, page 118.
