Congratulations on your great find. As Quiltngolfer suggested you might be able to get some one at the Lowes, Home Depot etc. to cut it for you. For now a nice plastic shoebox with lid from the $ store may fill in the space behind the machine for a while until you get it done.

Exactly what I need, you are so blessed. If you could make a template of the opening out of paper, you could take it to a glass cutting place and get them to cut you a piece of plexiglass. You could lay a piece of freezer paper or brown wrapping papeer over the opening and trace it. Shouldn't be too hard. Good luck, you'll make it.
