Follow the link to wingrider's suggesstion. You don't even have to use a rulerinside teh fabric once you get the hang of it you can eyeball it.
I didn't even know this video existed when I did mine. I fold all my fabric half the width and the length to fit two rows in my drawers with the fold facing out. Looks nice and neat.
I sorted by colors: reds/dark reds; pinks/dark pinks; greens/dark greens; etc. Each color has its own drawer. Even the whites, tans and blacks. I have another drawer for the multicolored where no one color is more powerful. As soon as able, I will start another drawer for holiday fabric.

Not the best shots, here are a couple of cabinets. I pull down the white cloth to cover the fabric, easier with the doors taken off.

Even if I had the capabilites to post pic's of my sewing room, I wouldn't dare :roll: I have some fabric in somewhat of any organized manner, mostly FQ's but so much of it is just piled in chairs, cutting table, ironing board; you get the picture. To cut, I have to push it out of the way, and to use the ironing board, I have to pile it somewhere else :oops: I don't think I will live long enough to ever get it organized :roll:

What I do with my fabric, and it works for kind of small and yardage pieces. If you have a 6" wide ruler, fold the fabric from salvege to fold, then wrap it around the 6" ruler until it's all around the ruler. It is amazing how much fabric you can get in a small space after you do this.

Your stash looks more realistic than many I've seen because all fabrics don't fold neatly, especially if you've cut part of them. I simply arrange mine by color or kind of fabric, like batiks together, Oriental designs, etc. I store them as you do. (not"standing up" like some ). Actually, many of them look like they're untouched and still in a fabric store.
Have fun and don't worry so much about being a "neatnik."
