I learned to sew on a machine like this one in hs home ec class. My dad bought one for my mom in the early 60's and my sister still has it. I was able to find one about 15 yrs ago and paid $50 dollars for it. A good friend who had been a Singer sewing instructor oiled and cleaned up the machine for me.
As far as sewing, I don't think the present-day manufacturers have produced a machine that matched the power and endurance these machines had. Forgotten what the website was called but remember reading the Singer company history and how it declined in the 70's. Really a shame! Shows what happens when a company takes over but doesn't have the love and passion for what the company produces; only thing they're interested in is their investment!
