I hit a great 50% off sale as well . I bought fabric for my grandsons dinosaur quilt and a quilt kit called 'the Ontario quilt'. I'm particularily pleased with the savings on the kit. I saved $125 on it. The reason the store had the sale is that they are downsizing to half the size. Apparently there are 13 quilt shops within a 100 mile radius of London and a lot of competition these days. I guess that's good for quilters.

What they're trying to do is turn the inventory and recapture some of the investment in it to pay for new goods that they've previously ordered. Fabrics are typically ordered for a store up to 6 months or more in advance.
They're also probably trying to make room for more goods on their limited shelf space, unless they're going out of business like a lot of stores are. Then they're just trying to get some of their investment back.
