I've been quilting for only a year. My first project was a black and white 9-patch. I decided to add a 1 inch dark red inner border with a wider black and white outer border. The dark red made it really "pop". Black and white is on my list of favorite combinations. Your choices of black and whites are great!

I think in quilting anything that looks good to the quilter's eye is good. In my case, I used a neutral light colored gray thread - I didn't want the thread to get any attention. That's what I love about quilting - there are ssoooooo many options.

I just bought all the Turning Twenty books - I have them on my quilting table for upcoming projects. But, I have a real dilemma - we traveled from NC to California by car and I bought some beautiful material with Southwestern designs/colors in a cloth shop in Arizona - now, what pattern will show off the material the best? I don't want to cut it up real small - that will destroy the designs. The quilt will probably be a King or California King size quilt (maybe with a medallion in the center). So many patterns, so many choices, so confusing!

Deanna, if you would like to see an example of a beautiful black and white quilt with red applique on it, check out the My Rose of Sharon quilt designed by Bev Getschel on the cover of the December 2010 Quilter's World magazine. I also saw this pattern on sale on the net but have forgotten which web site.
