Please try to keep in mind where he was. In a doctor's office. He may have had many things on his mind at that point that made him irritable. Maybe he was there for something very serious or a family member that ha something serious going on with them. Doesn't give him the right to visit his mood on you, but you don'tknow what was going on in his mind.
Your quilt is beautiful. Too bad for him that he can't see that. Think of all the beautiful things in life he is missing out on right now. Don't you kind of feel sorry for him? Shake it off and move on. You have a quilt to be very proud of!

I think I might have said to Mr. Grumpy, "It sounds like you need a hug!" And if that didn't stop him, I might have gotten up to walk or get a drink then come back and sat down in a different seat, most likely next to someone who would ooh and ahh over your quilt. Gorgeous quilting,BTW! hugs to you!

I think the key to this conversation is "older man", I firmly believe you look at your past history with rosy colored glasses. You sort of round the edges, make things softer, if you know what I mean. Yes, people used to use old clothing, because that is all they had. The women welcomed bits and scraps of new fabric, but it was not readily available.
Your quilt is splendid!!
