This reminds me of something someone on here said a long time ago. She put the little child sitting on her lap (or is it IN her lap??) and taught her to place her hands in the right place to hold the fabric and avoid stitching her fingers. The adult operated the foot pedal. I think his is a good way to be sure that they are learning the safe way.

At the children's class at Martha Pullen Sewing School, boxes were used to place the presser foot for the children to reach.

My kids keep wanting to make things and I keep putting them off. I don't have the patience for their uneven borders so I commend you for having the patience and desire to allow her to make her mistakes and teach her anyway. :-) Good job, mama.

Since no one in my family did any kind of crafting I had to learn the hard way. You remember, when they had home economics in school. Well I wanted my girls to learn early and my graduation gift to both of them was their first sewing machine. Both are good sewers, but my youngest really spread out making beautiful greeting cards, christening gowns, great at machine embroidery, and makes a lot of her own clothes. About a year ago she did her first quilt and it was absolutely beautiful. Need I say more about how proud of my girls I am?

Too cute. My 5 yr old granddaughter wants to learn too only I am so worried she will get her fingers stuck under the needle. But if I don't start her now, it may be too late. She has such an interest, so off to help her after dinner.

This is just precious, and she is doing a Great Job give that girl a big hug.. You are a Wonderful Mother to take this time to teach her, I was sewing when I was five years old also but I did it alone, I just wish that my mother would have took time to help me, so instead I just made my doll clothes and then taught myself to embroidery and grow up doing these things on my own..God Bless you for doing what you are doing :D :D
