I also had a nice talk with my grandmother on the phone. I asked her all about how she learned quilting and when did they quilt etc.... She told me she learned it from her mother Leona and that they mostly quilted during the winter months (after harvesting was done).

She said quilting during the winter months gave them something to do and it was fun because they would go visiting and quilt 3 or 4 times a week. She said that the ladies would serve tea(or coffee) and sugar cookies. She said by the time she got married she had made 35 quilts and took 3 with her when she married my grandfather. The ones left behind at my great grandma's house were very well used and eventually fell apart and had to be thrown away. The three she brought with her when she married my grandpa, unfortunately, got destroyed in 2004 when my grandmother's house caught fire and burned down.

She told me that my grandfather learned to quilt from her. He would help her sometimes by helping her get blocks ready etc... and that in time he picked up some fabric one day and asked my grandma to teach him. So she did and once he retired from working he spent alot of time with her on the sewing machine. Aparrently his hand stitching wasn't small enough so he stuck to the machine. But he was good at quilting. he made many quilts, my grandma said he made at least 40 before he died in 1988. Six of those 40 were for his grandkids. That would be me , my brother, my two sisters and our two cousins. We all have them still except my brother. When hurricane Floyd hit in 1999, my brother's quilt was destroyed and lost. His house sat under water for two weeks. The quilt was never found.

And as you all know, I learned to quilt from my grandmother as well. So she has taught two people how to quilt and right now I am teaching my oldest sister( 37 yrs young) how to quilt with plans to teach my other sister (34 years young) how to do so as well. I also am teaching my niece Monique and am going to try to teach my brother's daughter as well, she is 11 years old. Because I want to keep this tradition in the family going for generations to come.

Hope ya'll didn't mind the family history there. :):):):)

It's nice to hear that families still pass down from great grandmothers to the newiest generations and generations to come. I hope that I can teach my grandson to quilt some day.
