we have a family friend who thinks just because I have a new Pfaff I should do alterations for him. I tell him my machine only sews new things.
I also had a woman wanting me to make covers for her couch and chair, never happened.
I have a book of pictures of the things I have made. One lady thought she would order little tote bags for all her grandkids. Mostly I make things for our church raffles and the fire dept raffles

I do mending for family and close friends, but don't enjoy it much. It's too hard to explain to them the difference between needlework/quilting and bog standard mending. Maybe I should start embellishing the mending!

Another time-honored tradition is what I call "pulling a Tony Crane" - you take so long and do such a terrible job that people don't ever ask you again. This strategy requires that you return the item bursting with pride on the good job you did. If you hear the "victim" muttering to him/herself some version of, "You've got to be kidding" then you know you've been successful.
