How did you transfer the pattern onto the quilt ?! Chalk ?

well..... That is a story in itself. I used a Fons and Porter water soluble graphite pencil. Using this tool I knew I would have to wash the quilt. Donna wanted a bring the back to the front type binding which I went ahead and did after the quilting was done so I could wash it and be assured the marks would come out. She also told me she prewashed all fabrics.

I made a mistake, I will NEVER EVER do this again. I did not test the pencil on this fabric. I had used it before on another quilt and the marks came out no problem so I figured I was safe. Well in a way I was. The marks did wash out of the fabric no problem but in some areas the graphite imbedded down in the holes made by the needle and transferred on to the thread. I always do my mark removal wash in plain cold water, no soaps or detergents. The marks didn't come out with the first wash! :shock:

I was horrified. Additionally I had put a couple of color catchers in with the wash and they came out tinged purple. So I had the possiblility of dye transfer from the dark purple to the white hanging over my head with subsequent washes. I did a second wash with clorox two for colors and detergent. Much better the marks were almost gone but I could still see them and they screamed at me like a beacon. DH recommended I soak the quilt for several hours or overnight. I kept thinking will the purple bleed with that? But I had to do something. So I filled the washer with cold water. Put the quilt in, a couple more color catchers and let it soak all day. Then did a 3rd wash with clorox two and oxiclean and much to my relief they were all gone and there was no bleeding or dye transfer. Phew. I would have been horrified if I had ruined someones quilt. Especially one destined as such a special heartfelt gift from a mother to daughter. The good lord was watching out for me and taught me a valuable lesson.

1. I will ALWAYS test my marking tools, even if they have been succesful in the past

2. I will try to use water soluable or air soluble markers whenever possible so my chances of color transfer to thread and needle holes is absolutely minimal.
