I love your embroideried bear. It looks really nice on your quilt. I was a beginner when I did this quilt, too. My sister helped me every step of the way, or I would never have known what to do. :D If I remember correctly, once you attach the sashing, the blocks work out to be about 16". Each block has different sizes of sashing. That's how they come out to be the same size. Hope that makes sense. I don't know where my directions are off-hand, but I still have them and will be glad to help you out any way I can. Just let me know.

That is machine applique. I used Steam A Seam II to trace and fuse the appliques to the fabric. Then I sewed them on with a blanket stitch using extra fine thread and a size 60 (I think) needle. Those were some teeny stitches.

I think my favorite block in the whole thing is the tree.
They're all unique blocks.
As I look at the pics of mine, I see how I struggled. I was a beginner and I couldn't cut straight or sew straight. Each block in the quilt was a new experience for me.
I like how yours turned out much better, Puzzwhiz. I still have all the applique to do -- oh, did you notice the applique piece in the middle of the quilt is on the back of our new nickles too.
I have so many applique patterns to use. The one that's intimidiating is the applique pattern of Lewis and Clark scoping out the terrain and pointing off in the distance. The one of Saquagewia (can't begin to spell that dear lady's name) is not the easiest to make out.

But it really wasn't that bad using the extra fine thread and correct needle. On the skinny pieces, you can't realy sew only the edges, just sew right down the middle.
I went searching through my purse for that nickle, but couldn't find one. Are you talking about the shaking hands applique? I found nickles with a ship and a buffalo though.
This quilt was a great learning experience with applique, paper piecing, half-square triangles, etc. I don't know if I will be quilting it too soon. I am still intimidated by that. LOL

Good jobs - both of you! I like both the bear tracks & the map backgrounds.
To make all of your blocks the same size, you can use "coping" strips. For example if you have a 6" & a 7" block, you would add 3" strips to one & 2" strips to the other, to make them both into 9" blocks.
