I just read that about the fabric requirements in the software. I was looking at Civil War layer cakes and wondering how much I would need. If a quarter of a quarter, 9"x11", willl make two blocks (or a block and a triangle) then a layer cake of 40 pieces would make 80 blocks. It would require a little more than 4 layer cakes.

I think I may go that route and try to find at least 5 layer cakes in different CW collections.

What is the original background fabric like? Is it a solid off-white or beige or is it patterend?

i haven't seen the quilt in person but when you zoom in on the original quilt in the software it looks like its solid cream.

i printed out the fabric requirements for this quilt.

    the red/white fabric i need 7 yards

    the white/red fabric i need 6 yards

the patterned indigo (for pieced blocks/triangles/corners) i need 12 yards

the solid blue triangles i need 2.5 yards on top of this number i would have to add for sashing and binding so about another 3-4 yards.

then of course the backing fabric.

    That's a lot of fabric!

A solid cream Kona cotton would be good then for my background.
