Default Menagerie now completed Zoo

Posted the start of a new project a few weeks ago. Purchased this pattern and most of the material in 2010. Now a guild challenge for "All Creatures Great and Small" has prompted me to dig it out and get it finished. This project was about embellishing the project. So taught myself to do 3-D embroidery that I used to put the flowers around the camels' necks. Took about an hour for each flower as I was all thumbs. Not planning to do a lot of that in the future. Used Crayolas for the first time to apply blush and shadowing. All were applied with a double-blanket stitch which I have never used before. The first time I have found a problem with a pattern and that caused me to improvise. No do-overs on fabric since there was no chance I could ever match the background. Used satin stitches in certain places, the turtle is one of my favorites.

Used Pearl cotton for the first time that is how I made the toenails for the Ostrich and I thought the fabric for this was so appropriate. The shop picked it out so I can't take credit. Again, more 3-D flowers at the cape. They had picked out a tonal dark blue for the outer border. Now that I have a stash, I thought this needs a bit of jazzing up so dug out a yard of tropical looking batik and by CAREFUL finagling I was able to make it work. Just like a new grandmother showing pictures. So I will quit for now. I like learning new techniques. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for all the details on this wonderful quilt. It's so amazing all the time & effort you put into it. I try to find one new thing to do on each quilt I make but NEVER as many as you did on your quilt! It's a fun quilt to look at & your long hours & detail really puts it over the edge. Thanks for the show of up close details.
