Mug rugs are a great way to practice this. You can either start with single mug rug size sandwiches, or something a bit larger that you can cut into individual rugs after they are quilted. To make them even quicker, FMQ just the top fabric to the batting, then sew the backing on envelope-style and turn, press and slipstitch closed.

I did a pink feather on the black and loved it so much that I'm planning a wholecloth with the working name 'Burlesque'...
