    You were lucky the folks were identified in the pic!! A quilt to boot. I cherish the old pics and hope always to find stories to go with the names. : )

    What a treasure this photo is. I was told that the reason these folks did not smile was that it took so long to set up the camera and it was too long to hold the smile so the more natural serious (stern) look was common. Probably would never get the whole group smiling at the same moment anyway.

    I agree, Jan, you nailed it! What good eyes you have. I had to go back to see the squares that I missed. It's a lovely quilt and a terrific photo.

    I think Jan got it right too....i thought rail fence with snowballs...them are tiny strips ! I wondered about no smiles too...maybe they had bad teeth? Or as someone suggested, it took a long time to set camera up and the people will be sitting/standing there awhile before photo was actually taken.
