    The thing that helped me the most is having a really open presser foot- I could see where I'd just been plus exactly where I was going. And SLOW....very very very SLOW. Don't get in a hurry doing this.

    I used Wonder Under. It's a paper backed fusible webbing. You trace your applique pieces to it, iron it on to the wrong side of your fabric, and press. You cut it out, and when you're ready to applique, you take off the paper backing and press it on to the fabric. It holds pretty well but it's still only temporary.
