    Default My first few hexies

I love scrappy quilts and I have loads of scraps, so I figured I'd try doing some hexes out of them. I'm also really out of practice doing hand-sewing, and this is certainly a project that gives lots of practice in that arena!

Here are all of the ones I've made so far (I've been at it for a little over a week)

I sort of fussy-cut when I can, but since these are scraps often the piece is just barely big enough to cover the template. I made my own templates, with a Fiskars punch, a hole punch, and some cardstock I had laying around.

I started putting them together into flowers, but I'm out of practice so a lot of stitches are showing. I'm not going to redo any of them, though; I figure once the templates are out and it gets quilted & washed most of that will be hidden. My stitches aren't perfect by any means but honestly I'm doing better than I thought I would so I'm happy with how it's going.

I'm getting a little better as I go, though, and matching the thread a bit helps too.

No idea what I'll do with these...probably just accumulate them until there's enough to make something out of them! I'm putting them together into those flower shapes but that's as far as I'm going to go until I have a final plan. They might just end up being a bunch of pincushions and potholders or something, LOL.

Love them!!! I have a question...can you cut and sew hexigons without a template behind each one?

You can, I did a Christmas wreath wallhanging without templates. However, you get a much cleaner and sharper edge to your hexies if you use the templates or paper.
