It's my first attempt at Paper Piecing (from a free pattern online)...very easy pattern to do and my daughter wanted a black/white/red quilt...I think i have 10 more blocks to do but have been so busy with other things...good thing she's not ina rush...LOL

The cut outs look like they could be used in a "braid" pattern. I started a little one. I'll see if I can find a link to a pattern for you. I really enjoyed doing that pattern.
